We rolled our blue Marketing Mobile and a 30-foot hybrid bus through the closed streets of downtown Urbana to our spot on Broadway Avenue south of Main Street. The festival renames Broadway between Main and Elm “Green Alley.” The organizations that line both sides promoted alternative transportation, recycling, sustainability, and healthy living.
It was also a sweet spot because the local Illinois-grown sweetcorn station (the main attraction of the festival) was located at the end of Green Alley on Broadway & Elm.
According to the Urbana Business Association’s website, the event is “frequented by as many as 50,000 individuals from both the Champaign-Urbana and surrounding communities in Central Illinois. This festival is also the official welcome for incoming and returning University of Illinois students.”
MTD staff were there Friday and Saturday to distribute the new Maps & Schedules book for the 2013-2014 service year, answer questions, hear feedback, and handout FUNctional giveaways.
Just after midnight on Saturday, MTD’s night-time Maintenance Crew retrieved our vehicles from downtown. It only took ten minutes thanks to Urbana Public Works!
We reported to the University of Illinois Quad on Sunday, August 25 at 7:45 am. Between our Marketing Mobile and the pallets of books, it’s essential that MTD arrive early so we can get our vehicles in and out.
Jan Kijowski, Marketing Director, and I returned to the scene at 10:00 to begin set up. We were fielding questions and handing out information by 11:00. Many new students are anxious about learning how to ride MTD’s fixed-route service.
“This is an ideal event to reach thousands of our riders,” Kijowski said. “We give them the information they need and show them that MTD is there for them.”
Six and a half hours, 2,800 Maps & Schedules books, thousands of App Garage handouts, and a few hundred frisbees later – we rolled off the Quad. Thanks to the Illini Union Student Programs and Activities for coordinating another great day!
Did we get the opportunity to chat with you this weekend? Did you attend either or both events? What did you think?
