Riders quickly learn how to access MTD’s online Trip Planner. They pick out their favorite method of tracking buses through the STOPwatch real-time bus departure information. They text us, open an app, check m.cumtd.com, use our website, or simply give us a call. I’m not worried about riders discovering our tools. What I do worry about is riders having an experience like this tweeter:
The reason Ms. Tyndall could not board the 100N Yellow on that Sunday evening is because MTD is operating reduced summer service. During the University of Illinois fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks, MTD pulls back the frequency and amount of service we provide. Summer reductions began Saturday, May 11.
Every route affected by service reductions is marked. The service alterations are detailed on each route page in both our Maps & Schedules Book and on the schedule pages of our website. Notices are posted on our buses in advance of each break. The lead story on our homepage details the dates and routes affected. MTD uses this blog to prepare riders (take a scroll through the CUMTD News category) and shares multiple reminders on Facebook and Twitter. If a rider plans a trip during the dates of the breaks, the itineraries reflect the service reductions.
For seasoned year-round riders, the service reductions come as no surprise. They know which routes are affected and which trips will require more time. But for University of Illinois affiliates spending their first summer on campus, they may be left in an unfortunate predicatment.
We wish we could provide the same level of service year-round. MTD simply does not maintain the same level of funds nor answer to the same service demand during the UI breaks. So as a result, our system becomes a bit more complicated.
Our recommendation is to visit our website more often. We invite everyone to connect with us on social media. Taking a trip on a new day of the week or at a different time? Take a couple of minutes to reference a schedule or plug it into our Trip Planner. Or give us a call!
What can we do to help you? Is there a medium we’re missing?
