Entries are due by February 20, 2012 and the winners will be announced March 7, 2012. Brandon Bowersox-Johnson of Pixo and the Urbana City Council, Dr. Kevin Jackson, Assistant Professor of Accountancy at the University of Illinois, and Matt Wettersten of WCIA television are MTD’s three judges from the community. These three, along with MTD employees Karl Gnadt, Director of Market Development, and Amy Snyder, Communications Specialist, will evaluate the applications submitted for the Challenge.

Brandon Bowersox-Johnson is the Vice President of Technology at Pixo, an information technology and creative service company in Urbana, and an Urbana City Council Member. Brandon represents Ward 4 on the Council and serves on the Urbana-Champaign Big Broadband (UC2B) Policy Committee and the Urbana Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. Brandon grew up in Urbana-Champaign, and attended University High School and then the University of Illinois. "I’ve been an MTD rider all my life, and I’m honored to be judging this exciting competition," Brandon said. "I can’t wait to see the new apps that make riding the MTD even more convenient, efficient and fun!"

Kevin Jackson, Assistant Professor of Accountancy at the University of Illinois, holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Texas-Austin. His professional experience includes work as manager-assurance and advisory business services for Ernst & Young, San Antonio; accounting supervisor/senior corporate auditor for Baker Hughes Inc., Houston; and senior accountant, KPMG Peat Marwick, Houston. Dr. Jackson’s relationship with UI students makes him particularly interested in the development of high quality transportation tools. He says, "As someone who interacts with students who often rely on MTD service, I am very interested to see how their transportation experience can be improved."

Matt Wettersten joined WCIA as the Weekend Sports Anchor in August of 2010. A graduate of Bradley University, he's lived most of his life in Illinois. Prior to joining WCIA, he spent two years working as a Sports Anchor/Reporter at WLFI in West Lafayette, Indiana. When asked about how he feels about participating in the MTD App Challenge, Matt replied, "I’m excited to be a judge for the MTD App Challenge and can’t wait to see the creativity of our community!"

MTD announced its App Challenge on December 1, 2011. Software developers are encouraged to create applications for smart phones, desktops, and other media using MTD’s Application Programming Interface (API) V2.0 and submit them for judging. The first place award is $1,000 and is accompanied by a second place $600 prize and a $200 third place prize. The panel of judges will consider the app's functionality, usability, design/aesthetics and innovation. Applications can be created for any platform and any operating system. The MTD App Challenge ends February 20, 2012 and winners will be announced in March. Applications can make it easier for MTD riders to get important information about bus service including next bus departure times, bus stop location, trip planning, and much more. Developers may creatively harness MTD's API and make tools that public transportation users can use every day to make their journey easier.

Developers who enter MTD's App Challenge have the opportunity to win $1000. This first place award is accompanied by a second place $600 prize and a $200 third place prize. MTD judges will consider the app's functionality, usability, design/aesthetics and innovation. Applications can be created for any platform and any operating system. The applications must use V2.0 of the MTD API and must be offered free to customers for at least six months. Developers who have an app based on V1.0 of the API need to upgrade to V2.0 to submit their app for the challenge.

The MTD App Challenge ends February 20, 2012 and winners will be announced in March. Students can use their winter break productively to get started on a fantastic app for bus riders to use! The variety in the type and size of businesses applying for the BFB award shows the many different ways to create a Bicycle Friendly Business. MTD applied for the higher designation and has worked hard to increase bicycle friendliness in the workplace to raise itself from the Bronze designation they previously had. There are 252 BFBs in the United States.

“We are happy to recognize CUMTD for their investment in bicycling as a vehicle for improved employee health, social responsibility and economic growth,” said League president, Andy Clarke. “Some of the most successful companies in the world are showing that investing in bicycling is not only good for health and sustainability but also the bottom line.”

CUMTD tirelessly supports and advocates for safe and accessible bicycling and pedestrian travel in our communities. CUMTD encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities at the workplace such as a bike repair station.

“We are proud of the roadmap that the Bicycle Friendly Business program provides and how CUMTD used it to transform into a Silver BFB,” said Bill Nesper, Director of the League’s Bicycle Friendly America program.

CUMTD and the accompanying Fall 2011 BFBs have taken advantage of the free tools and technical assistance that the League offers. The League guides companies through many simple, effective and creative ways to get businesses and their employees biking and encouraging bicycling in the workplace. When our employees bike, great things happen: reduced heath care costs, connections to the community, and a fun and healthy work culture.

To apply or learn more about the free BFB program, visit the League online.

About the Bicycle Friendly America Program

The Bicycle Friendly Community, Bicycle Friendly State, Bicycle Friendly Business and Bicycle Friendly University programs are generously supported by program partners Bikes Belong and Trek Bicycle’s One World, Two Wheels Campaign. If you’re not familiar with that phrase, it is a way for software developers to incorporate CUMTD’s route, schedule, and real-time departure information into their applications, websites, and mashups. Previously, any application that was created to help riders access our bus service data was scraped from our website. As a public transit agency, we believe our map and schedule data should be public.

With the open API, developers can confidently create applications with scheduled and real-time departure data. Interfaces filled with STOPwatch data and route information make riding public transit easy and personal. We look forward to seeing the new and interesting ways the community can put this data to use. Other than our web applications and widget, CUMTD does not currently provide any other native applications of its own. All applications, free and otherwise, are not affiliated with CUMTD.

So, party on developers! We look forward to seeing your creativity!

Whoa! What's That Cool Bus I See?

The MTD's newest vehicles are operating on the streets of our fair city! The 23 40-foot New Flyer hybrid diesel-electric buses are in daily operation. These clean-burning diesel-electric hybrids contribute to MTD’s fleet being more than 80% clean burning! These buses replace the oldest of MTD’s diesel buses and are the latest additions to MTD’s growing hybrid diesel-electric fleet. In 2009, MTD introduced its first hybrids with five 30-foot hybrid Gillig buses and four 60-foot articulated hybrid New Flyer buses. MTD also has five multi-passenger vans which are diesel-electric hybrids. Long-range plans are for all diesel buses to be replaced with hybrid diesel-electric vehicles. The introduction of diesel-electric hybrids is a significant part of MTD’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Community members who desire to have a positive impact on their environment by choosing an alternative transportation mode, like public transportation, make an enormous difference in their community’s well-being.

MTD ENewsletter & Blog

Interested in all things MTD? Ridership on Monday, June 21, 2010 put the fiscal year’s total over 10 million for the fourth time in the history of the District. Riders who chose transit instead of single-occupancy vehicles saved money, reduced the impact on infrastructure, had the opportunity for exercise, and minimized negative environmental impacts.

The increase in MTD ridership comes at a time when national transit ridership is in decline. Continuing the recent trend, in the first quarter of 2010 there was a 4% decrease in bus travel nationally as reported by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). The MTD has bucked that trend and has taken measures to improve its operations by increasing services and lowering fares. In August 2009, the MTD implemented significant extension of services, introduced new routes, and drastically lowered the cost of an annual pass from $235 to only $60.

This is the first time the MTD has exceeded 10 million riders since the introduction of Automatic Passenger Counters (APCs) in 2007. APCs employ infrared curtains to count when a passenger boards any bus at any time and provide a very accurate accounting of ridership.

Citizens in our communities depend upon the MTD’s reliable, effective, and affordable services to get them where they need to go whether that is work, school, shopping, or entertainment destinations. The MTD’s services offer mobility and accessibility opportunities for riders. The millions of rides taken on transit instead of in single-occupancy vehicles significantly reduce the need for parking, decrease congestion, increase chances for exercise, and improve air quality. The entire community benefits from a healthy and well-used public transportation system.

MTD Recognizes Employee Excellence

The MTD acknowledged employee excellence at its 32nd Annual Awards Presentation held June 6, 2010 at CityView at Illinois Terminal in Champaign. MTD bus operators, maintenance and administrative personnel, retirees, Illinois Terminal employees, and long-term employees were recognized at the banquet and awards presentation attended by MTD Board members, employees, and their guests.

Outstanding Performance and Safety Awards were presented to operators, maintenance employees, and Illinois Terminal staff. The MTD’s services and operational practices make it a leader in the local sustainability movement.

The MTD is a participant in the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Sustainability Program. As a signatory organization, the MTD has agreed to make sustainability a part of the organization’s strategic objectives, identified a sustainability champion within the organization, established an outreach program on sustainability, and undertaken a sustainability inventory for the organization. The list of sustainable internal practices is long, and includes use of green cleaning products, education opportunities and formation of “green teams,” use of renewable furnishings, recycling programs for many waste products, and a reduction in energy and water consumption by retrofitting lighting with CFLs and LEDs, fine-tuning HVAC practices to operate more efficiently, and shutting down vehicles more often. The MTD purchased nine hybrid diesel-electric buses in 2009 and more hybrid vans and buses are to be received in the future; vehicle emissions are greatly reduced due to the hybrids and the installation of diesel particulate filters on older buses.

Capital projects underway to improve sustainability are installation of a geothermal heating/cooling system and a white roof at the operations and administration center, and installation of permeable pavers in the parking area. Two bus simulator training vehicles are being purchased to decrease fuel consumption and emissions. Staff members are investigating the feasibility of solar/wind power to generate energy at Illinois Terminal and the garage facility as well as for bus shelters.

Using public transportation is one of the many ways that individuals can reduce their carbon footprint while having greater mobility choices. The MTD works closely with community groups advocating for bicyclists and pedestrians to ensure that users of public transportation can make the trip to and from their transit connection conveniently and safely. The MTD is the lead agency in bringing a car share program, Zipcar, to the Champaign-Urbana community, works closely with Champaign County Bikes, and is Chair of the Campus Area Transportation Study (CATS) Education Subcommittee. CATS projects include a Light the Night bike light distribution campaign during which bike light sets are distributed free prior to the initiation of Daylight Saving Time.

The MTD is a champion of sustainability in two ways: by providing excellent public transportation services whose use can help improve the environmental health of the community and by employing sustainable operational practices. The MTD is leading the way to a sustainable future. The three-year contract agreed that the partners would be released from their financial obligation once the minimum guaranteed revenue was generated through vehicle usage for two consecutive quarters. This was achieved in the fourth quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010. Zipcar was launched January 13, 2009.

Based on the current level of vehicle usage, each of the four partners will save the more than $38,000 that would have been paid during the remainder of the three year contract. Zipcar has provided oral verification that the minimum guaranteed revenue was exceeded for two consecutive quarters, and the terms of the contract dictate that the partners are released from the guarantee.

The MTD, cities, and university united to bring the Zipcar carsharing program to our communities and university in an unprecedented partnership. The local program is the only one in which a college or university and the local community have worked together to introduce Zipcar. In order to attract Zipcar to this small market and to offer vehicles beyond the boundaries of the UI campus, the partners and Zipcar agreed that Zipcar would be guaranteed minimum monthly revenue. If usage of the vehicles did not generate the minimum revenue, the partners made up the difference. By guaranteeing a monthly minimum, it was possible to locate vehicles in downtown Champaign and downtown Urbana as well as on the University of Illinois campus. Zipcar usage has been robust for the first 15 months of the program and membership has grown every month since inception. The program has grown from six cars at the beginning to the current ten cars.

The team that has made the Zipcar program an ongoing and growing success in Champaign-Urbana includes Rob Kowalski and Stacy Rachel of the City of Champaign, Pat Pioletti of the City of Urbana, Morgan Johnston of the University of Illinois, and Jay Rank and Cynthia Hoyle of the MTD. While no longer required to provide financial backing, Zipcar will continue to enjoy the support of the partner organizations to ensure that access to this mobility option continues well into the future for community residents and students.

Upgrade Your Widget Today

Download a new, upgraded Widget today by clicking here. It's quick and easy, and you'll love the new service. Take advantage of this simple way to get STOPwatch real-time information for your stop with the click of a button. The previous version of the widget will no longer work after August 18. Click here for more information about the Widget.
MTD Annual Pass $60

The price of an Annual Pass is only $60. To that end, invitations were sent to executives at more than 200 transit systems in the U.S. and Canada, resulting in 37 entries. The MTD submitted a 750-word application, and more than 50 employees were surveyed by the magazine, and was chosen as one of 10 transit agencies selected as "Great Transit Systems to Work For."

High per capita ridership and exceptional customer satisfaction (95% satisfied or very satisfied in a 2008 random phone survey) are due in no small part to the outstanding employees who work for the MTD. The MTD’s ability to attract and retain its excellent workforce is largely because it is one of the best transit systems in the country, and an excellent regional employer.

The MTD’s stable leadership has created an open and familial environment for employees with Directors and Managers very accessible to employees. In addition to being readily available when concerns arise, every three months Managing Director Bill Volk spends an entire day meeting with employees to discuss whatever is on their minds. The MTD’s Core Values of committing to ‘yes’; providing outstanding customer and public service; developing long-term, positive relationships; and embracing opportunity and innovation are acknowledged and valued at all levels of the company.

Critically important components of managerial/employee relationships are the eight committees structured for guidance and input on key policy, communication, and social activities. The committees’ responsibilities span various organizational components; each is chaired by an administrative staff member and staffed by operational and maintenance personnel. Committee members review policies and procedures, coordinate on activities and communications, and develop and lead social activities. Committees have significant input on the direction in which the MTD is headed, and ensure that employee attitudes and opinions are known and respected.

Those chosen along with the MTD were Alexandria Transit Co. (DASH), Alexandria, VA; Capital Area Transit Authority, Lansing, MI; Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority, Dayton, OH; Greater Hartford Transit District, Hartford, CT; GRTC Transit System, Richmond, VA; Orange County Transportation Authority, Orange, CA; Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas, NV; Riverside Transit Agency, Riverside, CA; and SunLine Transit Agency, Thousand Palms, CA.

The MTD has long realized that its greatest assets are the employees who choose to work for the District, and is proud to have been chosen as one of the “10 Greatest” systems to work for.

To read the entire article, please click here. You know! But you can never be reminded too often to practice safe behaviors. Here are a few reminders:

Watch for vehicles when you're walking.

It's a well-known fact that busy streets self-police. Use that to your advantage.

Turn down your iPod while walking to class; make sure you can hear sirens or cars honking.

Look before you cross the street. Only cross at crosswalks.

Carry a cell phone and call someone if you need help.

Find out where the emergency phones are on campus, and use them!

Use the buddy system. There really is "safety in numbers."

If you feel unsafe, hail a bus. Tell the driver you are feeling uncomfortable, and they will help you get help.

Park in a well-lit, heavily populated area. Consider what the area will look like after dark.

Bicyclists should be aware of pedestrians and automobiles while cycling.

Public Transportation Reduces Greenhouse Gases and Conserves Energy

The American Public Transportation Association has announced results of a study titled “Broadening the Connection between Public Transportation and Energy Conservation.” The study found that the most energy efficient households in America producing the least amount of carbon are located within close proximity of a bus or rail line. The people in those households drive an average of 4,400 fewer miles annually as compared to persons in similar households with no access to public transportation. Public transportation users in the U.S. save the equivalent of 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually—more than 11 million gallons of gasoline per day.

While many of the results are applicable at the national level and especially in large cities, even in small communities like ours the use of public transportation is something that an individual can do TODAY to reduce their carbon footprint, and to help alleviate congestion. The study reports that people living in households near public transportation travel 12 fewer miles per day which is 27% less than persons in households with no access to public transit. This equates to an individual household reduction of 223 gallons of gasoline a year. By eliminating one car and taking public transportation instead of driving, a savings of up to 30% of carbon dioxide emissions can be realized.

For complete study results and more information, visit the APTA website.

Public Transportation Saves $6,200 Per Household

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has completed a study indicating that households can save up to $6,200/year by using public transportation.
