Adding a Little Zip to Public Transportation
While buses provide an economical and environmentally friendly solution for most people living in the city, there are times when you just need a car. For these moments, MTD partnered with Champaign, Urbana, and the University of Illinois to bring an innovative car sharing solution to central Illinois.
Car sharing is a service provided to members who reserve cars to meet their short-term automobile needs. Members reserve cars by the hour or day and are able to fulfill their need for a car without having to own, insure and maintain one.
Hip, hip for Zip!
Zipcar represents our community’s commitment to car sharing. Each shared car removes, on average, 15 to 20 privately owned cars from the streets; consequently reducing greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, traffic congestion, and parking demand. Zipcars are convenient to access and simple to reserve. Reduce the carbon footprint from private vehicles and save some cash! Gas and insurance are included in the low hourly and daily rates. Members have the freedom to go where they need to, when they need to with access to Toyota Prius and Matrix, Honda Civic and Hybrid, Mazda 3, and a Scion xD and xB.
Let’s Get Down to Brass Tacks
Membership is $50 per year for residents of Champaign-Urbana and $35 for students, faculty and staff of the University of Illinois. All new members must allow a driving record check to approve them for insurance. There is a one-time fee of $25. But, new members receive driving credits equal to the cost of their first year registration fee!

Residents and students can place a reservation for one of ten cars that live in six locations:
Downtown Champaign in the public parking lot at Neil & Washington, near 1 Main
Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana at southeast corner
UI campus near the corner of Wright & Daniel
UI campus at Ikenberry Commons in parking lot off of Euclid
UI campus at corner of Goodwin & Illinois, across the street from Krannert Center
I-Hotel at St. Mary's & First, facing First St.
